1. Bannack Road
Difficulty Level: Moderate
Bannack, Montana
This incredible trail was initially meant for transporting freight between the two cities, Montana and Utah. This freight road was established way back in 1862! You can see the old cemetery that’s still there at Waypoint 4 to get a glimpse of the bygone Wild West era, as well! From Bannack Road, you can access and explore the Bannack ghost town, which still features well-preserved buildings, structures, and amazing relics of the past - perfect for the Halloween season! The trail winds its way through grassy hills and a wide valley with the Rocky Mountains visible in the distance, so there are plenty of natural sights to admire as you experience the wonders of off-roading!
2. Flatiron Mountain
Difficulty level: Moderate
Flathead National Forest
Once you enter Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, you MUST experience Flatiron Mountain Road! The trail is just under an hour’s drive from West Yellowstone and Ennis. The good news is that traffic is slight and there aren’t many people around throughout the fall season. So, you can enjoy some well-deserved tranquility while enjoying the incredible vistas of the very best that Montana has to offer! Just look at those views!
3. Gravelly Range Road
Difficulty level: Moderate
Ennis, Montana
This amazing ridge road can take you nearly to the Idaho border with feeder roads that drop down both sides of the ridge to West Fork, Virginia City, Black Butte, and many other off-road adventures! A good plan for a picnic day trip is to begin in Ennis and take the Gravelly range road to the West Fork road which leads back to US 287. Consider a 30-minute drive back to Ennis for dinner with the family too! This trail is the perfect match for your Renton Jeep!
4. Antelope Basin
Difficulty Level: Easy
Island Park, Montana
Another one of the best off-roading destinations near Bozeman is Antelope Basin! If you’re looking for an easy, beginner-level trail with breathtaking mountain views, wildlife, and forests, this is the trail for you! Located in the largest national forest in Montana—Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, which spans approximately 3.5 million acres—this trail features stunning scenery of mountains, valleys, and lakes that off-roaders can experience as they gently climb over the mountains. To avoid traffic, we suggest traversing this trail in the fall!
